DIY Pop-Up Awning Modification, ripped zipper/ carrying bag

January 28, 2015

The Fleetwood pop-up that we purchased is a 2007 model. That being said, overall it is in really good shape. One of things that time had wreaked havoc on was the awning zipper covering. If you look at the photos you can see the damage.

We found a Pinterest post that lead us to take this DIY approach to resolving our issue. The process was very simple. We purchased 4 straps on Amazon  and I made sure that I had a fresh blade for the box cutter.

  1. Once we had all the supplies we roughly measured the distance that 4 straps would need to be evenly spread out.
  2. The next step was to cut away the plastic flange that slides into the metal housing.
  3. After all four straps were in place, it was time to slide the flange back into the metal housing. This was hardest part. It took a little more patience than I usually have to get the awning case inserted back into place.
  4. The whole process took about 30 minutes. That includes the removal of the awning itself, the cutting of the rubber flange to allow the straps to fit into place, and then the re-insertion of the rubber flange back into its original position.

We will be traveling for the first time since we made the modification this coming week (08-01-16). I don’t foresee and travel issues and I can’t imagine setting up the awning would be affected in any way either. I will update this post once we get back from our trip.

UPDATE: It worked like a charm, no issues at all. If you try this method please feel to leave a comment letting us know how it worked for you and any helpful hints you may have for others.
