Fort DeSoto Campground

August 8, 2017

We just spent a week down at the Fort DeSoto campground (08-01-17). This was our longest trip so far and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. The campground has about 230 sites broken into 3 areas. All the sites have water and electricity, but there are no full hook-ups at all. Area 2 is designated as pet friendly if you travel with your critters. We camped on site 210. We liked it but would try to stay on sites 30, 87, 103, or 192 next time. The campground itself is separate from the beaches, so if you plan to go to the beaches I highly suggest you bring your bikes or plan to take your vehicle. It is about 1 mile to East beach and 4 miles to North beach from the campground. The entire Fort DeSoto park is very bike and hiker friendly. For all you road bikers some of the travel roads are a little rough and would benefit from repaving. Here is our take of our stay.

First Impressions:

  • Good sized lots with plenty shade, some have an area for play before water begins
  • Clean restrooms and facilities
  • Great campgound for fishing, kayaking, and any other water sport
  • Campground General store had a great selection, though pricey.

Settled In:

  • Mosquitos were horrible!
  • Major issues with crazy ants, we literally had to spray our vehicle with ant spray on several occasions to get rid of them.
  • Raccoons were a major pain in the behind, they were not scared of people at all. At every turn they were trying to grab stuff from our site.
  • North beach is nice for collecting shells and the swimming section is nice with a snack shack and rental house.

Lasting Impressions:

  • Next trip we would plan better for all types of bugs and raccoons.
  • Bring a kayak or canoe.
  • We suggest visiting some of the other local parks, beaches, and museums (Dali Museum for sure) in the immediate area as well.

6 out of 8 thumbs up!
